THE CORRECT ANSWER: Georges Liautaud

Born at the end of the 19th century, Georges Liautaud was originally a village blacksmith who made and repaired agricultural tools and iron cemetery crosses. His encounter with the Art Center in the 1950s transformed his utilitarian practice into a revolutionary art form.Starting by flattening used oil drums, he created a unique visual language, populated with voodoo deities and hybrid figures. His genius was to see in industrial metal a flexibility allowing the expression of Haitian spirituality. He not only founded a stylistic school at Croix-des-Bouquets, but he also opened the way for generations of sculptors.Today, his works are present in the permanent collections of prestigious museums such as MoMA, testifying to the universal impact of his creativity born from recovery.
