Suzanne Belair, immortalized as Sanité Belair, remains one of the boldest female figures of the Haitian Revolution. Wife of Charles Belair, nephew of Toussaint Louverture, she did not settle for a role of observer or logistical support. Actively engaged in the armed struggle against the re-establishment of slavery by the Leclerc expedition in 1802, she obtained the rank of sergeant and then lieutenant in the indigenous army. She courageously participated in the clashes in the Artibonite Mountains. Captured by French forces after fierce resistance, she was sentenced to death by a military court. At her execution on October 5, 1802, she refused to be blindfolded and braved her executioners until the last moment. His military heroism and stoic rejection of servitude make him an eternal symbol of Haitian patriotism and resistance.
