K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, is the second highest peak on Earth at 8,611 meters above sea level. Located on the Pakistan-China border in the Karakoram massif, it is considered by many seasoned mountaineers to be a much more demanding and perilous challenge than Everest. Its extremely steep slope, its pyramidal shape exposed to severe weather and its technically complex crossing, such as the famous Bottleneck area under blocks of unstable seracs, make it the most formidable mountain for expeditions. His first successful ascent was accomplished in 1954 by Italian mountaineers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. K2 retains a particularly high mortality rate, earning it the evocative nickname of Wild Mountain among the international high mountain community.
