Which famous ghost town in Ukraine was abandoned overnight in 1986 following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster?

75% of players answered correctly.

THE CORRECT ANSWER: Pripiat

Located in Ukraine, Pripyat is arguably the most famous ghost town in the modern world. Founded in 1970 to house the staff of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and their families, it had nearly 50,000 inhabitants before the disaster of April 26, 1986. The city was evacuated in an emergency within hours of the explosion of reactor number four. Abandoned to haste, Pripyat remained frozen in time, becoming a real open-air museum of the late Soviet era. There is an iconic Ferris wheel that was to be inaugurated on May Day, classrooms littered with books, rusty rides and deserted buildings where vegetation is gradually regaining its rights. Today, it is a poignant symbol of nuclear risk and a unique observation site for science.
