Which Middle Kingdom pharaoh is famous for his military campaigns in Nubia and the strategic fortification of the First Cataract?

75% of players answered correctly.

THE CORRECT ANSWER: Sesostris III

Senusret III, one of the greatest monarchs of the Middle Kingdom during the 12th Dynasty, is renowned for his administrative reforms and his military genius. In order to ensure absolute control over Nubia and to exploit its rich gold deposits, he led formidable campaigns towards the south and consolidated the border at the level of the second cataract of the Nile. To secure this sensitive area against incursions, he ordered the construction of an impressive network of colossal fortresses, notably at Semna and Bouhen. These highly sophisticated citadels featured massive ramparts, deep moats, and defensive bastions. In addition to his warlike exploits, Sesostris III profoundly reorganized the central administration by definitively breaking the power of the local nomarchs. His original sculpted portraits, revealing dark, worried features marked by the demanding exercise of royal power, contrast sharply with traditional idealist statuary.
