THE CORRECT ANSWER: 1698
The city of Jacmel was officially founded in 1698 by the Compagnie de Saint-Domingue, at the time of French colonization. The chosen location, at the bottom of a sheltered bay on the south coast of the island, responded to a strategic and commercial need to develop maritime trade. Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was occupied by the Tainos under the name of Yaquimel, an indigenous toponym which would later give its name to the city. During the 18th century, the city developed around its port and the agricultural production of its hinterland. Its geographical location between sea and mountains has made it an important commercial crossroads. This foundation at the end of the 17th century marks the beginning of a rich urban history which will shape over the centuries the very particular cultural, heritage and economic identity of this great city in the South-East.
