Which megacity in Southeast Asia is facing rapid sinking of the ground due to overexploitation of groundwater, pushing the authorities to plan the transfer of the administrative capital to another island?

75% of players answered correctly.

THE CORRECT ANSWER: Jakarta

Jakarta, the current capital of Indonesia, is considered the fastest sinking megacity in the world. Certain neighborhoods of this conurbation of more than thirty million inhabitants are sinking several centimeters per year below sea level. This alarming phenomenon is mainly caused by the excessive and uncontrolled pumping of underground water tables, associated with the massive weight of modern constructions. To protect the population from recurring marine floods and the risk of progressive engulfment, the Indonesian government took the historic decision to build a new administrative capital called Nusantara on the island of Borneo. Jakarta nevertheless remains the economic and financial heart of the country, battling daily traffic congestion, air pollution and the environmental challenges posed by climate change in this vulnerable coastal region.
