Which nomadic people from North Africa and the Sahara nicknamed “Blue Men” are famous for their indigo-dyed clothing ?

38% of players answered correctly.

THE CORRECT ANSWER: The Tuaregs

The Tuaregs are a Berber (Amazigh) people who inhabit the Sahara desert, distributed between Mali, Niger, Algeria and Libya. Their nickname “Blue Men” comes from the tagelmust, a long indigo-colored scarf that they wear to protect themselves from the sun and sand. Since indigo dye is not fixed by a mordant, it ends up coloring their skin a characteristic blue. Traditionally nomadic, the Tuaregs are organized into tribes and have their own alphabet, Tifinagh. Their society is original because it gives an important place to women, who do not wear the veil and manage the family property. Despite the increasing sedentarization imposed by modern borders, they retain a strong identity linked to poetry and music (the famous Tuareg blues), symbolizing resistance and freedom in the vastness of the desert.
